OUr Approach

We equip heroes to find their unique calling and excel in a rapidly changing world.

More than ever, parents in Grand Rapids and West Michigan are looking for a better
educational option for their children. From our Montessori-based Kindergarten to upper studio apprenticeships, we are reimagining what 21st century education can be.

Their journey will lead them to:

Learn to be curious, independent, lifelong learner
Develop a deep respect for economic, political and religious freedoms
Cherish the arts, wonders of the physical world and the mysteries of life on Earth
Discover their most precious gifts and learn to use them to solve difficult problems
Discover his or her God-given gifts and learn to use them to serve others.

Their journey will help them develop traits for lifelong success, including:

Thinking critically and independently
Embracing challenges
Taking responsibility
Having grit and resilience
Learning from our mistakes and failures
Strengthening their faith and character
Possessing a growth mindset

Their journey will prepare them for life by:

Working independently and in small, collaborative groups
Developing and launching a startup business
Developing and signing contracts to govern their commitments to each other
Working as an apprentice at a local company
Engaging in hands-on projects where they build, grow, design, and more

What our heroes’ parents are saying about Journey.

“We saw our child come to life, and gain confidence in himself and who he is as a person in a way we have never experience before.”
- Sara
“I highly recommend Journey for all parents who wish to give their children the gift of being a curious, life-long, and motivated learner.” - Kira
It's a joy to be a part of a community that thinks critically, offers new ideas, encourages students to be their best selves, promotes a growth mindset and problem-solving skills, and works together through adversity and difficulty. Plus, no homework!! ;) - Lauren

Our campus

We’re a blend of the best of the old and the new – a community one-room schoolhouse, like those that built America, fused with the best of modern technology and 21st century organizational design.

At Journey, each hero learns real-life skills and advances at their own pace through hand-on projects and world-class technology.

Heroes are grouped into three learning studios (our much-improved version of the “classroom”):
Elementary Studio [Age 6-12]
Intermediate Studio [Age 12-15]
Spark Montessori [Age 4-7]

What Makes Us Different?

Learning at Journey

Learner-driven

We believe young people are capable of much more than the tasks traditional schools force on them. By challenging learners to independently set and attain personal learning goals, they take
control of their learning journeys, push themselves out of their comfort zones, and build internal drive.

Mastery-focused

At Journey, our learners have the opportunity to learn at their own pace, allowing them to excel quickly in areas of strength and take the time to learn thoroughly before moving on in others. This allows each student to continually be challenged by their work. They showcase
their mastery by earning badges, assembling portfolios, and leading a public exhibition of their work.

Curiosity-based

We seek powerful questions, employ problems from – and places in – the real world to launch projects and nurture innovation through creative problem solving.

Courage-filled

We seek challenges, address problems and face fears looking to overcome and grow academically, spiritually and relationally.

Christ-Centered

We follow the ultimate hero Jesus, centering our practices on Him while hospitably making room for others to come and learn with us.

Does tuition cover everything?

Tuition alone does not cover the cost of running our school. We run lean, and we rely on generous gifts and grants to make up the difference. If you are led to continue paying full tuition, we would be so grateful. Giving like this makes it possible for other families to access necessary tuition aid.
